How much do honeycomb blinds cost in NZ?
Our honeycomb blinds start from $159/m², supplied and installed. On a standard 1.8 × 1.5 m window (2.7 m²) that works out around $429, and a large 2.4 × 2.1 m window around $800. Are honeycomb blinds worth the extra cost?
For a cold room, yes. Consumer NZ measured heat loss through a single-glazed window with different coverings fitted and honeycomb blinds came first, retaining more than 60% of the heat that escapes through a bare window. That is a real difference in a single-glazed New Zealand home. For a room that is already warm, where you mainly want light control or a particular look, a roller blind at around a third of the price does that job just as well — and we will tell you so at the measure.
What are the disadvantages of honeycomb blinds?
Three genuine ones. Price: at $159/m² they are roughly three times an entry-level roller blind. Cleaning: the cells collect dust and are harder to clean than a flat roller — a vacuum brush attachment is the usual method, and hard scrubbing crushes the pleats. And light gaps: a standard honeycomb blind leaves small gaps at the sides, so for true bedroom darkness you want blockout fabric with a tight recess fit, or side channels.
What is the difference between honeycomb and cellular blinds?
Nothing — they are two names for the same product. You will also see them sold as Duette, cellular shades or pleated cellular blinds. The fabric is folded into hexagonal cells that trap air, which is where both the name and the insulation come from.
Should I choose single-cell or double-cell?
Double-cell fabric has two rows of cells instead of one, so it holds more still air and insulates better, at a higher price. For a bedroom, a south-facing room, or anywhere single-glazed and genuinely cold, double-cell is usually worth the difference. For a warmer room or a mild aspect, single-cell is enough. We bring both to the measure so you can compare them in your own light.
Where do honeycomb blinds not make sense?
Kitchens and bathrooms — the cells trap moisture, steam and cooking grease, so an aluminium Venetian or a moisture-resistant roller is the better choice there. They are also a functional fabric rather than a decorative one, so if the look of the window is what matters most in that room, curtains or Venetians will do more for it. And if budget is the binding constraint, a well-fitted roller inside the recess still stops a useful share of the heat loss for far less.
